Why Choose Primal Keto?

There’s many diets out there, so why should you choose Primal Keto? I want to point out a couple of things concerning where the criticism of keto comes from (spoiler alert: it’s the industries that benefit from your sickness), what’s wrong with the mainstream keto diet vs ancestral, and why I and others believe it is the natural human diet. I’ve included many sources as links in this article. A couple of things to understand as the basis for keto:

Fat is not the enemy. This is a lie that has been put forth by billions of dollars of lobbying and skewed study results from the Sugar, Agriculture, and Grain industries in an attempt to avoid sugar, seed oils, and processed foods getting the blame. Saturated fat in particular has been blamed for heart disease and clogged arteries when the actual impartial studies have shown that there is no association between the two. Second study. Same thing with cholesterol. Second cholesterol study. There’s a great documentary about this called Fat Fiction if you want a crash course. The health of people in developed nations has only declined since this ideal became the norm and foods like margarine and seed oils were introduced in place of the animal fats we have always cooked with.

If you zoom out a little bit and think about diet, humans have been eating whole animals for as long as we know. This includes many fat rich parts that people don’t even eat today like eyes, organs, and all cuts of meat. Animal fat was also used as the only cooking oil in most of the world up to the mid 20th century. Why weren’t people overweight and dying of heart disease when they were consuming eggs, butter, and meat without prejudice?

Your body can run on either fat or carbs for energy. When you are fasting or eating meat and vegetables, your body starts to use fat (from your body or food) for energy (ketosis). This is the optimal fuel for the brain and may actually have a healing effect in the brain. Ketosis is an extremely regenerative state that rids the body of free radicals and other oxidative damage. It also decreases inflammation which can have great results for avoiding aging, healing the pancreas/diabetes, and healing cancer. Inflammation is the engine behind almost all modern diseases and Primal Keto is the ultimate anti-inflammatory diet.

If you think of it from a hunter/gatherer mindset, chances are we were mostly fasting in between big hunts where we would then feast on every part of the animal. Breast milk is also keto which flies in the face of people saying it’s not ideal for building muscle, since babies are growing at a rapid rate. Some studies have found people put on muscle mass while not even exercising on a keto diet versus a control group on a high carb low fat diet. Keto has also been shown to increase testosterone dispelling that myth yet again.

Weston A Price studied indigenous cultures that weren’t effected by “modern diseases” and their diets were mainly keto. They ate whole animals, raw dairy from animals that ate their natural diet (no grains), fermented foods, and fruits in moderation as you would find them foraging. They experienced perfect teeth, strong bones, comfortable pregnancies, and vibrant health into old age as a result. This leads many researchers to believe that this is the natural human diet and ketosis is far from a fad, more like a state we’ve been in for most of our existence.

Low fat diets actually have a lot of negative side effects. Your body needs fat to break down and transport many important nutrients, vitamin D in particular. Vitamin D is extremely important to immunity and directly related to the synthesis of testosterone. This effects men and women. When one hormone is off, the others follow suit. Low fat diets are also a factor in developing gallstones. For this reason, it is important to eat plenty of fat when you cut out carbs.

My version of the keto diet keeps things simple and strives to lower inflammation as much as possible in order to have optimal results. Personally I think the reason some people fall off keto or end up having side effects down the road is that they are not taking food quality or nutrients/antinutrients into account. I combine my knowledge of antinutrients from the Paleo/Primal diet, ancestral wisdom from Weston Price protocols, and my experience as a chef to make it as simple and satisfying as possible. We will not be eating bacon wrapped blocks of pasteurized processed cheese product 😉

You can stay in ketosis eating non-primal foods like artificial sweeteners, a small amount of grains, and processed foods. The issue is that the antinutrients will give you cravings from malnutrition and MSG turns off the satiation signal in your brain, so you will be perpetually unsatisfied. Blocked liver/detox pathways from breaking down these foods will slow down weight loss and interfere with hormonal correction as well.

While you may sometimes experience cravings out of nostalgia, once you’re over the initial switch from carbs, you will be fulfilled on a nutrient dense keto diet. A lot of anaerobic bacteria (“bad bacteria for lack of another term) feed on sugar and carbs. Once you eliminate those foods (sugar, pasta, bread, cereal, etc), those bacteria will die off and stop signaling to your brain to eat these foods. It’s really eye opening how strong the brain-gut connection is when you experience how it can influence your desires as you cut these foods out.

Another advantage nutritionally is that these carbs are being replaced with much more nutrient dense foods. Many grain based foods actually carry nutrients out of your body instead of nourishing you with bioavailable nutrients. When this is replaced with nutrition that our gut can actually absorb, not only are we getting off the aging blood sugar roller coaster, we are also resolving deficiencies that we may have had for years. This gives us optimal fuel and recovery times for our athletic pursuits or just busy everyday life.
